All Aboard!!!

March 19th, 2006 · 4 Comments

Had quite the long day a few days ago. 7:55 minutes block time. That’s five minutes shy of our 8:00 maximum in a 24 hour period. We flew all that in just two legs, starting in Hartford at KBDL. Our first flight was a quick 1:10 minute hop to Philly, where we turned the airplane in record-time (for Philly, which is notorious for delays). As we pushed from the gate there, we had an idea what was in store for us. We were off on a flight from Philadelphia to LAX. We like to call the flight the “Hemmorhoid Express,” as it seems like nothing short of FOREVER in the seat.

All aboard!!

A nice twenty-minute delay in ground-traffic at Philly, combined with an average of 110 knots of headwind which decreased our groundspeed to below 350 knots made for a nice 6:45 flight. I got up to move around and use the lav twice, but that only provided temporary relief from blood loss to my legs.

I’m definitely more cut out for short-haul flights of two hours or less than I am for long-haul trans-continental flights.

Congratulations are in order for a fellow member of the aviation “blogosphere.” Aviatrix, author of Cockpit Conversation, got some good news today! She’s been offered a position with “Vole” (she renames her airlines after small burrowing mammals to maintain anonymity) as a Captain on a “Weedwhacker,” which I imagine is a DeHavilland Dash-8.

Good for you, Trixie! I’m glad you got what you were after! Feels good, eh?

Thank you, I applaud your confidence in me! The Weedwhacker is significantly smaller than Sam’s Miniwhacker. When you figure out what the Weedwhacker is, you’re going to wonder, “what the heck was she flying before?!” And then you’re going to figure that out. (Or maybe I’ll just tell you). And you’ll laugh.

Here’s a clue, GC. Based on Trix’s description of the flap system, I’ve concluded that Trix’s Weedwhacker is the twin-engine airplane I flew for Ameriflight.

I’m about a week ahead of you, Sam.
