Wright Amendment News!

Looks like another domino will be falling shortly.

Legislation Introduced to Exclude Nebraska from Wright Amendment

Nebraska Representatives Lee Terry, Jeff Fortenberry, and Tom Osborne introduced legislation yesterday that would amend the Wright Amendment to allow nonstop flights from Nebraska (including OMA) to Dallas Love Field.

“The Wright Amendment is wrong for Nebraska,” said Congressman Terry. “My bill simply adds Nebraska to a list of states that are now exempt from the Wright Amendment, which prohibits Southwest Airlines from flying directly from Love Field to Omaha and many other cities.”

Congressman Fortenberry added, “The Wright Amendment is an outdated piece of legislation which decreases competition and keeps Nebraskans from getting the lowest possible airfares. Our neighbors to the east, Missouri, recently received this exemption and prices are now more competitive for flights to Dallas in their state.”

OMA Airfield Director Don Smithey has stated that airfares would drop at least 45 percent on the route, which would save travelers almost $20 million annually. American now controls 84 percent of the DAL-OMA market.

“This is all about competition and giving air travelers from Omaha’s airport more choices and lower prices,” said Congressman Terry.

That’s great news! Hopefully other states will follow suit and slowly but surely whittle away that pesky Wright Amendment.
