Bad night!

January 9th, 2005 · No Comments

I slept really poorly last night. I woke up this morning feeling as if my head were swollen (more than usual) and when I looked into the mirror, I had the worst looking dark circles and bags under my eyes. I’m not one who’s too concerned about the way I look, but at the moment I look, at the very least, hung-over. I haven’t even had an alcoholic beverage in the last week! I have no idea what might have caused my lack of sleep last night or my shot-looking eyes. It might have been the deli-plate I had in United first-class last night. I thought it was a little on the salty-side.

I was watching CBS Sunday Morning this morning when they showed an article about World Airways’ last flight out of Danang before its fall in 1975. World Airways had flown several Boeing 727 aircraft into Danang in order to allow refugees who were supposed to be women and children to escape the advancing North Vietnamese Army. When the first airplane landed, they were instead overrun by an angry crowd mostly consisting of cowardly deserting South Vietnamese soldiers who forced their way onto the plane by shooting and beating the real refugees. When the plane’s captain advanced the thrust levers to try and escape the angry mob, he had no choice but to run over whatever was in his path. They eventually made it off the ground with people hanging from the aircraft’s undercarriage and aft stair, as well as in their open cargo pits. With the airplane damage by small-arms fire and a grenade blast, and losing fuel, the pilots managed to limp to Saigon, all the while with people falling from the undercarriage to their deaths.

Here’s a link to a web-article about Paul Vogle, a UPI reporter who was on board the 727.

That story really puts some of my bad days at work into perspective!
