Spring Training…

April 7th, 2007 · 1 Comment

Baseball season is already well into the first week of the 2007 regular season. But as I said in my last post, I took a couple days of off time a few weeks ago to head to Florida. I drove two hours down to Vero Beach from Orlando to see my Dodgers at their Spring-Training compound, Dodgertown.

I arrived early enough to watch the players begin their daily field workouts. A little batting practice. A little outfield practice. Some pitchers working on their bunting skills. I stayed late into the day to watch the Dodgers take on the Detroit Tigers in a 1:00 pm game. The Dodgers won the game in the 9th inning with a walk-off home-run.

I shot over 2,200 photographs with my new Nikon (I replaced my old D100 with a brand new D200, which is a MUCH faster camera and more suitable to sports and aviation photography). But in true amateur photographer form, only about 5% of the pics I shot were anything worth keeping.

Here are a few:

Some of the younger players head out to begin their morning workout.

The great Maury Wills giving pitchers (l to r) Chad Billingsley,
Mark Hendrickson, Jason Schmidt, and Brett Tomko some
bunting and baserunning instruction.

James Loney takes a big cut in the batting cage.

Loney exits the cage.

Larry Bigbie roams center-field.

Andy LaRoche shags a few balls in left-field.

James Loney signs a baseball for a fan.

Pitcher, Derek Lowe, warms up in the home-team bullpen prior to the game.

Outfielder Matt Kemp during pre-game stretching.

Russell Martin, Luis Gonzales, and Tony Abreu stretch out.

Andre Ethier’s pre-game routine.

The umpires head into the stadium prior to the game.

Detroit’s Neifi Perez on second base as Derek Lowe concentrates on the hitter.

Detroit’s Chris Shelton fouls one off.

Rafael Furcal swings and misses.

Catcher Russell Martin waits in the on-deck circle.

Martin strokes one into the left-center gap for a double.

Second-baseman, Jeff Kent.

Tommy LaSorda has been eating too much pasta lately.

Jeff Kent fields a sharply-hit ball during the top of the 3rd inning.

Olmedo Saenz stands on third base during the 7th inning,
waiting to be driven home.

The Dodgers have been in Vero Beach for Spring Training since the early 1930s, but their time there will be ending soon. The team will begin constuction on a new facility in Glendale, Arizona that will be opened for Spring Training 2009 (at the earliest). Good news for Dodger Fans, as their team will now be training a mere day’s drive from their regular-season home. I wanted to see the original Dodgertown before they moved. I had a great time, I got a slight sunburn, I ate way too much garbage food, and I spent far too much money. But I’m glad I did it.
