Photography Is…

September 3rd, 2008 · 8 Comments

Photography, at least as I define it, is 10% equipment, 40% skill, and 50% being in the right place at the right time. If there’s one thing I’ve learned since I began taking this hobby seriously, it’s that if I see a photographic opportunity and pass it up, I will kick myself for at least a week.

Fortunately, I decided that I couldn’t pass up a photographic opportunity that presented itself to me as I descended the air stairs from the rear entry door of my flight into Burbank last Sunday night. Here’s the result:

Sunset at Burbank Airport (Alternate Crop)...

Prints of this image are now for sale in a variety of sizes in my online gallery @ gcalvin.com .

Great shot. What was the exposure you used?

The image itself is a link to where it’s hosted (my flickr.com photostream). If you look in the right hand margin of the picture’s page, you’ll find a section called “Additional Information” that tells you what kind of camera it was taken with. Follow the “More Properties” link, and you’ll find the complete EXIF data for the image, which will tell you all the exposure settings. You can find this information in all my images.

The above image was shot with the Nikon D3 with a 50mm lens. The camera settings were ISO 400 and a 1/50th of a second shutter speed at an f/2.8 aperture.

    Hope that helps!

That’s gorgeous, GC. I notice I’ve been taking quite fewer photographs since I upgraded and stopped doing walkarounds! On nights like the one you had in Burbank, I think I’m gonna have to start stealing preflight inspections.

GOOD Captains steal preflight inspections from their FOs when it’s raining.

Nice to hear from you, Sam.

“…50% being in the right place at the right time.”
You are so right! I live in the Northeast US and during foliage season, I ALWAYS have my Nikon with me. You never now when that perfect cloud formation or sunset is going to happen. Friends often rave about my photos. I too attribute their greatness to being ready for when the time happens.

I’ve also learned to always have a small pocket sized in my flight bag. There’s just so much beauty when you’re flying. And you never know what plane you are going to see on the ramp.

One flight I didn’t have my camera, I returned from a meeting to find a B-17 parked right next to my Skyhawk. UGH! I wanted a pic sooo badly. “Never again” I vowed.

Ahh…a fellow Nikonian! I glanced through your Oshkosh images. Nice stuff! I need to get out there one of these days…

I’ve added a link to your blog on my blogroll, btw.
