Phony Old Stuff…

January 7th, 2009 · No Comments

I got an advertisement card in the mail recently from Guitar Center (yeah I play…not well, but whatever) advertising Fender’s new line of guitars. They aren’t anything new or different at all in terms of guitar design. In fact, they’re pretty much identical to what Fender has been building steadily for the last fifty years. What they are is newly-manufactured guitars that are artificially worn to give them the look of a guitar that has seen thirty years of gigging and travel, calling it “a design aesthetic that conjurs up the ghosts of past music lives.” They’re calling them “Road Worn.

So, essentially, for a couple thousand bucks, you can get a gimmick guitar that looks like it has a history when in fact it has no history whatsoever.

How sad.

I own a Fender Stratocaster that I purchased new about five years ago. It’s never left the house, and probably never will, since my playing is definitely not fit for human consumption. But going back to my post about my flight kit bag, I’d have to say that I’d prefer to add all the dings and dents and scratches to it through years of playing it myself. That way, when I hand it to my daughter one day, I can say, “See this? This is where my belt buckle wore a hole through the paint” or, “See that? That’s where I dropped it on Eric Clapton’s toe.”

Okay, maybe i won’t be able to say that last thing. But at least my shiny burgundy-red Strat will have a real story!
